High in Ethiopia’s Gheralta Mountains lies Abuna Yemata Guh, a 5th-century church carved into sheer sandstone cliffs. Reaching it is not for the faint-hearted, you climb barefoot, gripping narrow ledges with dizzying drops beneath you.

But at the summit, the reward is profound. Inside the cave-like sanctuary, walls glow with ancient frescoes of saints and angels, preserved for centuries in silence and incense. A priest, standing calmly at the cliff’s edge, seemed to embody the courage and devotion that define this place.

Abuna Yemata Guh is more than a church, it is faith etched into stone, reached only by those willing to climb for it.
